Death Records

From a copy of a person's death certificate, you can find out the most amazing things, like funeral home names and where they are buried. If you write a funeral home director and ask nicely enough, even if it's only a pretext, he will often provide you with addresses and phone numbers of family members. So, if someone you are trying to locate has a family member whom you know has died, this may be the way to go.

Also, please note that if you find a person listed in the Social Security Death index, you may write for a photocopy of the actual application for a Social Security card (Form SS-5--Social Security Number Record Third Party Request for Photocopy) - there is a small fee associated with such a request. Here is the address:

Social Security Administration
Office of Central Records Operations
Attention: FOIA Workgroup
P.O. Box 17772
300 N. Greene Street
Baltimore, Maryland 21290
