Spies Online E-mail Newsletter http://www.spiesonline.net Issue #3, March 14, 1998 Feature Article: Introducing James Smith: Professional Lie Catcher by: Joanne Waldron I asked Jim Smith to give me a little bit of information about what he does. Here's what he told me: "Confidential Information Services can help you close your most troublesome cases by ferreting out the truth from the most evasive subjects' very own words. Statement Analysis regularly closes cases that had been relegated to the 'round file.' "Investigative Communications Analysis employs a methodical, reliable two-fold approach toward forensic data analysis: 1) Uncovering intentionally withheld information, and 2) Digging up intentional deception. "I.C.A. is based upon principles of psycholinguistic verbal content analysis. Examination of an open statement, interview, deposition or letter, etc., can uncover the subject's usage of fabrication, evasiveness or concealment of guilty knowledge. "Moreover, forensic linguistic analysis can provide enhanced background information regarding the subject's frame of mind, stress, thoughts about personal relationships, and critical information about recent conversations of significance. [Analysis and evaluation of recent conversations accounts for a significant percentage of criminal case closures.] "The I.C.A. procedure is sensitive to personal feelings about possessions, relationships and "responsibility," psychologically paramount factors in all crimes! "I.C.A. is useful in devising optimal interview and interrogation strategies, and is especially effective with Insurance Fraud, White Collar Crime, Robbery, Child Abuse, Sexual Assault and Homicide Cases. "I.C.A. is an effective method of probing for leads that can serve to FOCUS and provide Direction to an investigation, saving money, effort, blood, sweat (and, sometimes even tears)." This is just a brief introduction. We'll be hearing more from Jim and bout his extensive qualifications in future issues of the Spies Online Newsletter. Here's a little bit about Jim in his own words: "I have an investigative specialty that can help focus most investigations I'm a clinical psychologist (M.A.) [Michigan: 6301003830]. I specialize in Forensic Language Analysis. [Content Analysis; Statement Analysis; Discourse Analysis, etc.] Which includes: 1) Detection of Deception, based upon the subject's literal words, and 2) Unobtrusive Forensic Personality Profiling, based upon the subject's own words, writings and/or behaviors. I'm not a licensed investigator; just an M.A. psychologist. I have no wish to be an expert witness. It would be difficult for a jury to connect with language analysis."
