A Few Tips For A Data Emergency Situation
1. Do not attempt to power up a device that has obvious physical or mechancial problems (i.e. ticking or grinding). This will make the problem worse!
2. Don't run any programs that write to or alter the problem media in any way (i.e. do not install any programs on a drive where you have lost data.) The program you install might overwrite the data that has been lost! Please remember that all data should be recovered to a drive or partition other than the source.
3. In order to make sure no media or good backups are overwritten during a crisis, it's a good idea to activate write-protect tabs.
4. Check to make sure power cables and such are properly connected and for other obvious problems.
5. Avoid the urge to attempt any do-it-yourself solutions before speaking to a specialist. Please. This kind of action can render data unrecoverable that was once recoverable.
